FAQ

Is my child the right age for Kumon?
Children may enroll as early as preschool, and Kumon is attended by students throughout primary and secondary school. It's always preferable to start young and begin developing skills early to get the greatest cumulative benefit. Having said that, however, some children are not ready for the structured learning that Kumon requires. We generally believe a child is ready for the Kumon program when he or she can sit still for 10 minutes in front of an assistant, follow basic instructions (i.e., "please repeat after me...", or "what number comes next..."), and be able to separate from parents while they are in the center.

Is Kumon an "Enrichment" program or a "Remedial" program?
Both. Kumon can help children who may be struggling and need to catch up, as well as those who are seeking enrichment. All students progress at their individual paces and are held to the same high standards at mastery. This means that some students may repeat the material more than others. Our goal is for all students to begin studying above their school grade levels and to always have opportunities to reach their full potential.

Why is Kumon such an effective complement to my child's schooling?
In school, material is taught according to grade, which corresponds to age, and classes advance as a group. Needless to say, not all children develop at the same pace, and not all children grasp all concepts at the same pace. Kumon allows each individual child to govern his or her own progress according to his or her needs and abilities. Many students, event the "A" students, have gaps in their learning. The Kumon program allows students to develop a high proficiency of thinking in math and a high level of comprehension in reading through speed and accuracy. Kumon students develop a strong ability to have patience with their work, to pay attention to details, and to persevere to stay on task.

How soon will I see results?
Some children progress very rapidly, while others take longer. We view education as an ongoing process. Kumon is not meant to be a "quick-fix" solution, because learning mastery takes time. We work closely with the parents and the students so you are always aware of the milestones and how you can help your child accomplish them in the fastest time. We encourage parents to keep their children enrolled for at least six months to a year before judging the effectiveness of the program. Many children stay with Kumon for years and advance their skills way beyond grade level.

How much of a time commitment does Kumon require daily?
Most students attend Kumon twice a week year-round and do brief daily assignments at home on the other five days. Usually, Kumon sessions and assignments can be completed in less than twenty minutes for math or reading. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged and recommended for optimal results.

Does Kumon offer preparation for standardized tests?
Kumon specializes in nurturing skills that improve all aspects of academic performance, including test-taking. Through daily timed assignments, students become thoroughly accustomed to working under test-taking conditions, developing key time management and problem-solving skills. Few students are as well prepared for major standardized exams like the SAT as long-term Kumon students.

Why haven't I heard more about Kumon?
Kumon has chosen to devote most of its resources to developing its programs rather than promoting its name. While Kumon has grown steadily in North America — largely by word-of-mouth — it has been a household name in the Asian-American community for a long time.

How does Kumon differ from other tutoring programs?
The Kumon method and Kumon materials are unique just as our philosophy of fostering self-reliant students is unique. We build independence and accountability for students own learning. Students work every day as opposed to once or twice a week. They have to record their times and correct every mistake on the same day. They participate in setting their own goals. They are engaged in their learning process and grow to be confident learners. We believe that when students develop strong work skills, work ethics and responsibility, they are able to tackle any challenge that might come their way.

What kind of diagnostic test will you give my child?
Kumon has developed its own diagnostic tests for students enrolling in its programs. Their primary purpose is to show us where students will be most comfortable starting in the program. The math tests concentrate on assessing speed and accuracy with basic calculation skills, because a strong foundation in this area is crucial for success with Algebra and all higher math. The reading tests concentrate on assessing basic reading, comprehension, and writing skills.

My daughter is on the swim team, takes dance lessons, and gets tons of homework. I am not sure if she can fit Kumon into her schedule.
Kumon recommends that you come to the center twice a week for about 20 or 30 minutes per subject. Homework, which should take around 10-20 minutes per subject, must be completed on the five days that students do not attend the center. It's not a lot of time each day -- many students find it easiest to do their Kumon first thing in the morning or before their regular homework. What is crucial is that the work be done daily, so it is important that each family be able to commit to this schedule. Without this commitment, you will not see the results.

How long is the Kumon Program?
Kumon is a long term program rather than a quick fix. It takes most students approximately six months to one year to catch up to their grade level, because we go back to ensure they have a strong foundation first. The center is open all year-long, and students should stay enrolled throughout the year to maintain the study routine that they first establish when they join.

My child needs help with math and reading. Can I enroll her in both subjects?
Students who study math and reading with Kumon benefit greatly by developing the two most needed skills for their future success. For some students, it might be best to enroll in one subject only at first. For others, the 20-30 minute daily work requirement is very manageable.

How do I get started?
It's easy. Just call our center at 781-982-3052 to speak with us to find out how Kumon can address your child's particular needs. At that time, you may want to set up an appointment for orientation and free placement testing. Generally we try to meet with you within a week. Since Kumon is a year-round program, students may enroll at any time throughout the year, even during the summer. Also, don't forget to let us know how you have heard about our program.

Cost
Parents are usually pleasantly surprised with how affordable the Kumon program is. They often comment saying that our prices represent a fraction of what they are quoted at the competitor's programs. Plus, we offer discounts for multiple subjects and multiple children enrolled in the program.

There is no substitute for thoroughness in learning.
