| Center Policies and Procedures |
1. Center Time - Students enrolled in one-subject attend the center for approximately 20-30 minutes while two-subject students attend class for approximately 30-50 minutes. One-subject students should arrive no later than 30 minutes before closing while two-subject students should arrive no later than 45 minutes before closing.
2. Study Atmosphere - In order to maintain an atmosphere conducive to studying, we request that only students enter center study area. Please make sure your child visits the restroom and gets a drink of water, if desired, prior to entering the center. Once students are in our care, going to the bathroom requires us freeing up an assistant to accompany students to the restroom, thus distracting the center activities. Food, drinks, and chewing gum are not allowed in the center.
3. Waiting for Children - Parents should not leave the building while their children are in the center unless you notify us in advance.
4. Daily Commitment - Kumon parents understand that Kumon requires daily commitment on their part. When parents are serious about educating their children and developing their life study skills, children will also engage and learn to respect learning, to organize their time, and to take responsibility for what is important in their lives. Parents must ensure that their children have the time to do their Kumon work by wisely managing the activities the child is involved in after school. Kumon needs to fit comfortably in your child's routine every day. It cannot be rushed and cannot be the last thing your child does during the day.
5. Home Grading - Parents are involved daily in their child's Kumon studies by setting the time for work completion, marking Kumon homework, preferably as soon as the assigned worksheets are completed. With a red pen, parents should mark and score the work using the answer book provided by us. At the top of the first page, please summarize the time taken for each set and the number of errors made in the entire packet. This gives us a quick idea of how each child did on the homework before starting the work in the center. Home grading helps children learn from their mistakes by correcting them immediately.
6. Parental Support - It is important for the parents to help us reinforce the messages we are sending to your children every time they are in the center, including:
the quality of work is important, and neatness is a skill to learn
striving to achieve 100% accuracy is essential for building a strong foundation
recording times correctly is an important part of the learning process
working continuously and diligently from the beginning to the end of each set builds strong concentration skills, attention to details, and patience
completing Kumon work every day teaches students responsibility for small tasks
keeping work organized (in page order), stapled and returned back to the center teaches students responsibility for their work
studying examples and learning from mistakes develops self-reliance and self-learning skills
7. Parental Involvement - We cannot stress enough how important your involvement is in educating your child. We are here to help, but we have to work together as partners to assure the fastest progress with ease and minimum stress on you and your child. Please call us if you have questions about how to work with your child at home, what learning milestones we are working to accomplish and to discuss anything that relates to your child's Kumon work and progress. While we do not schedule periodic progress conferences with parents, you may request a meeting at any time. Please note that meetings will not be scheduled during center hours.
8. Hanover Center - Our small waiting area is provided for our students only. Younger students should wait there until their parents pick them up. Please do not gather in that area. The safety of our students is our first priority; therefore, we must keep this area available for the little ones at all times. Please turn off your cell phones while near the front of the center.
9. Kingston Center - due to our open space, the waiting are is for reading only. For the benefit of our studying students, please no loud talking, no cell phones, no running or games. Thank you for understanding.
10. Holiday Closings - Kumon is a year-round program of study. Students may enroll at any time during the year. We generally follow the holiday closing schedule of the Hanover and Kingston Schools. Upcoming vacations and holidays are confirmed in our monthly newsletters. Kumon homework is assigned 365 days per year unless otherwise requested by a parent at least one week in advance. Parents may request to have us schedule less work during vacations.
11. Class Attendance is a vital part of the Kumon program. Observing students during their session helps us greatly in understanding their readiness for harder work. We generally introduce new sets in the center to help us plan the work. If a student is unable to attend class, please let us know ahead so we can provide adequate amount of homework. If something comes up on the center day, please call us and we will leave the work out in the pick up box outside of the entrance to our center. (Hanover center work may be picked up any time the mall is open - 8am to 10pm). In Kingston the work can be picked up anytime since the pick-up box is outside.
Your feedback is important to us. Our goal is to provide the best Kumon experience to you and your children. Let us know how we are doing and if there is anything else we can improve in our services to you. Call us or mail us any time. Thank you.
